This 2 hour presentation will discuss how eating patterns, exercise and body image are affected during the reproductive cycle of women, including those who were previously in remission from an eating disorder. The current DSM criteria for eating and feeding disorders will be reviewed with an emphasis on how symptoms may present in pregnancy or the postpartum period. Assessment questions and treatment interventions clinicians can use will be shared, as well as local resources.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify 3 specific ways disordered eating may present in the perinatal period.
2. Learn 2-3 assessment questions to increase clinician comfort in discussing food, body image and exercise with clients.
3. List 3 interventions clinicians can use to help correct disordered eating and improve body acceptance in postpartum or pregnant clients.
4. Name 3 referral options in MN for specialized care of clients who are pregnant, postpartum or trying to conceive and have an eating disorder..

Anna Barlage, LMFT, PMH-C works in private practice with adults and adolescents (ages 13+), and is comfortable with a wide variety of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, body image, and relationship with food. Anna has a particular passion for women’s mental health across the lifespan, and has been trained to treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. She believes it is an honor to support women and parents throughout their childbearing years with issues including infertility, prenatal and postnatal depression and anxiety, life transitions, and loss. Anna also serves as PPSM’s Volunteer Director.
